What the number means

Year-over-year change in the all-items Consumer Price Index for urban consumers.

This chart calculates the twelve-month change in seasonally adjusted all-items CPI. A falling positive rate means prices are rising more slowly, not returning to an earlier level. It is not a household-specific cost-of-living calculation.

What it cannot tell you

Calculated from seasonally adjusted CPI, not a one-month annualized rate. Slower inflation does not mean prices have fallen.
